As many of you are aware we (Mid-rise) residents have had an on-going problem with vehicles speeding through Starboard Drive at unsafe speeds. These are not just other residents of the Villages using Starboard as a cut-through to the north exit, but also by service vehicles of all types driven by outsiders. Over the past few months, the Mid-rise committee has taken up this issue. There were discussions as to how to remedy this situation. We considered speed humps, speed bumps, letters to all residents, and signs of various types. After much discussion it was felt that none of these proposals were truly going to fix the situation. Another idea was presented that seems like a best solution. That is to close off the south end of Starboard (Cutter/Topsail) with plantings and shrubbery similar to that at the south end of Cutter Lane. There could still be access if necessary by emergency vehicles, but normal traffic would have to go around the mid-rise buildings to access the north exit. At the February 9th Board meeting, the thoughts of the Mid-Rise Committee were presented and it was requested that the Board consider closing off the southern end of Starboard Drive.
While sympathy with this recommendation was expressed by some Board members, there were other reactions as well. One Board member thought that Mid-Rise owners should be canvassed to give all of us the opportunity to express our opinions. Likewise, maybe the rest of the Village residents need to be in on the proposal.
The Committee believes that Mid-Rise residents will not consider themselves unduly inconvenienced by having Starboard blocked at its southern terminus. Please email Jeff Federspiel, jeffreyfederspiel@gmail.com with your comments, concerns, or suggestions, if any, not later than April 1st.
