August 18: Secrets and Scandals: Rhode Island Politics from the Inside.

Phil West headed Rhode Island Common Cause for almost two decades, and from that vantage point he saw how government in the Ocean State really works, but instead of just complaining about it, he fought back.

The Providence Journal hailed Phil as the “godfather of political reform in RI.”

He has received glowing reviews for his recent book Secrets and Scandals: Reforming Rhode Island 1986-2006, which begins with a quote from Raymond Patriarca, reputed to have run organized crime in the Northeast from the National Cigarette Service Company and Coin-O-Matic Distributors, a vending machine and pinball business on Federal Hill.

The Boss observed “it’s easier to corrupt a small state.

If you have some dirty cops, some dirty politicians and a judge or two, you can corrupt the whole system.” Phil West will share with us how that system really worked and what can be done to clean things up.
